I was looking to see if Ryton were holding a potato day next year - looks like they are not, but they do advertise this on in South East Essex - Southend-on-Sea - one for Martin H, at any rate.

I've never heard of potato days until I found a few mentions to it on this board, it's a shame about Ryton as I haven't ordered any potato seeds and it's only a few miles away.

The alternative last year (for me) to Ryton was the potato day run by NOGS (Nottingham Organic Garden Society) which was brilliant. Held in a church hall, the variety was great, and the cup of tea and a homemade cake was top notch.

Although it's hard to justify the petrol to go all the way over there just for some seed potatoes, if there is not one closer to home, assuming that they are running one in 2015 (no details are not on their web site as yet), I will be going over there again. Worth it for the tea and cake.

Can't beat a bit of tea and cake! I missed out on the allotments potato order unfortunately, luckily Coventry Market sell a range and I'm sure the nurseries around me will stock them.

Is it me or is pre ordering a bit odd for potato days, thought the point was to go along and choose not find out people had grabbed the best stuff before the event?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Pre ordering lets you decide at home what varieties you want to grow for your soil conditions and plan out your growing space.
The Chesterfield Potato Day is in the town centre and gets very very busy and many popular varieties sell out within the first hour.

Hmmm, can see how it works but still not convinced. Maybe one of the reasons many varieties run out so quick is because people nab them in advance. The big thing I've loved about ones I've been to is being able to speak to the sellers about the varieties to get their knowledgeable advice and having lots of choice. Suppose it's a totally different sort of event but not sure your one would suit me as well if it were just picking up what I'd ordered as that wouldn't be any different to just ordering off the Internet from a shop.

For Shropshire there is one at Harper Adams University near Newport on February 8th, there will also be the S.O,Gs one near Shrewsbury but the date for that is currently unknown.

I used to go to the one in Dulwich but I couldn't find any details the last couple of years.....think they must have stopped doing one there.
It's a shame, it was a lovely day out.
There's one in Westminster but I doubt it will have the same delightfully subversive feel to it

I think the whole point of ordering ahead online is to try and prevent them running out of anything. Take for example this forum.... a discussion on varieties on here might be read by 10,000 people. If we all agreed that say, Anya was our absolute favourite spud they would become pretty popular over night. Pre ordering allows the companies to spot any sudden trends and cater for them.

For all West Yorkshire-ites, there is an excellent potato day in Saltaire every February. They haven't decided on the date yet, but you can check on the West Yorkshire Organic site...
