first time growing autumn/winter onion sets

I bought some today, as they were half price in Wilkinson, just a pound for a bag with 50 in there. 2p each, seem's pretty good. Doesn't state what varieties (there are three types, white brown and red) and the instructons aren't that great.

I hope to plant them this week after I've tilled the soil (picking up a second-hand electric tiller in the next couple of days).

Should I add anything to the soil? I have a little compost I could add, FBB and some chicken pellets from the pound shop that say they are for roses but which I'm guessing could be used for anything?

How long do they grow for, so that I can decide where to put them based on when the space they take up will become free again next year.

All being well they'll be in the ground until late June.

They don't need food this time of year, but come the spring they'll benefit fromo a feed once a month.

From Wilkos, I would imagine they will be Senshyu, Snowball & Electric. If your bed isn't quite ready you can start them off in trays then plant them out later.

Thanks Big, thats a big help. I think I have a tray or two in the garage, will have to check. I tend to keep hold of things!

This means I can start them off tomorrow and then wont have any pressure to get them in the ground, which is great.
