  • Who is the God of allotments?

    hi gang

    Right here's one for the learned amongst you

    Today during our Sunday morning brew session the conversation started off very intellectual and serious but after a few moments we descended into usual garden chatter, when the following question cropped up.

    "Who is the God of allotments"

    No one could come up with a reply, so I am throwing the queston over to you lot. (I have a funny feeling where this thread may go)

    I think it would be the same as the god of engineers...the one who seems to enjoy throwing a spanner into the works just for the fun of it.

      Its a Goddess - not a God!!

      Demeter, Goddess of the harvest, agriculture, the earth and fertility.

        Nah, it's the same one the farmers shout to when it's ;

        Too windy
        Too wet
        Too dry
        Too hot
        Too cold

        That of course is ......................... God Elpuss

            And St Fiacre is the patron saint of gardeners ....
            Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.
            Everything is worthy of kindness.

              Surely it's the usual suspect:

              We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land;
              But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand:
              He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain,
              The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain.

                Ahh, now this is where things get complicated, even if we accept the premise that God is omnipresent & creator of all things, there is according to your quote the need for a saint prior to God's input, as the fields have to be ploughed before the seed is cast we undoubtedly must have a blacksmith to make the plough to do it with, so enters St.Clementine patron saint of blacksmiths.

                    Loki, the Norse God of Mischief would seem to fit the requirements.

                      From the Demeter page - The first loaf of bread from the harvest is sacrificed to her.
                      Well next year she's having the first courgette and runner bean!

                          I think that gardening is like opening Pandora's Box. Instead of having evil, death etc coming out you have slugs, blight, diseases, rabbits and creatures like that eating your crops, caterpillars well the list is endless.
                          So my patron as it was the last thing to come out of the box is Hope.

                              Sorry but it just has to be done ; for all the Red Dwarf fans out there ....

                              Lister: No offense, Rimmer, but that is completely wacko-jacko.

                              Rimmer: Everyone's entitled to their beliefs, Lister. I never agreed with my parents' religion, but I wouldn't dream of knocking it.

                              Lister: What were they?

                              Rimmer: Seventh Day Advent Hop-ists. They believed that every Sunday should be spent hopping. They would hop to church, hop through the service, then hop back home again. I tell you, Sunday lunchtimes were a nightmare - we all had to wear sou'westers and asbestos underpants. You see, they took the Bible literally - Adam and Eve, the snake and the apple, took it word for word. Unfortunately, their version had a misprint. It was all based on 1 Corinthians 13: "Faith, Hop and Charity, and the greatest of these is Hop."
