  • Onions and leaves

    Afternoon

I am going down to the allotment after school today as my little girl has been shouting at me that I go and she doesn't.

I have a patch of ground prepared to plant some onions and garlic in today.

My question is can I cover the ground with leaves to rot down in situ? I will be covering the onions anyway as I have been warned they will be pinched by the birds so the leaves blowing away wont be a problem

    Thanks

Onions and shallots are really prone to fungal diseases so putting them in contact with any decomposing materials might not be such a good idea. I have a net over my onion sets and they are still poppingout of the ground.

Yep, mine too. It's as if they grow legs & go for a walk.

We've never had problems with onions pushing themselves out of the ground. We plant them so that their nose is barely visible
