  • What's your favourite chilli variety?

I love growing chillies, it's usually the first thing that I sow in the New Year.

I've got a few new ones to try thanks to the VSP/VC and small pumpkin - Trinidad 7, black naga and Trinidad scorpion and also some facing heaven. I'm on the look out for a few more.

Which varieties did you grow this year, what were you favourites and how well did they crop? What did you use them for? Photos would be welcome too ..

I have grew quite a few in my time and as I mentioned my favourite is probably Fatalii. Hotter than the habaneros but not too hot, good for homemade jerk sauces and things of the like. Lovely yellow pods and lots of them if grown somewhere sunny or under glass.

Cayenne is also a very boring to some but useful plant. I also have a thing for black varieties such as Jalapeno Purple with there pretty purple flowers!

To be honest.. I just like chillies.. I could go on and on.

      I'm a chilli fan
The best for me this year was Thai dragon. They cropped very well and had a good bit of heat without blowing your head off. I really enjoyed growing the very hot chilli's but the main reason I grow them was to see if I could. Now I have actually started eating some of my very hot chilli's I think I will be growing them again.
Here is the last of my crop ripening in the dinning room window.

Here is some of the things I do to the chilli's. Chilli jam and a big sweetie jar with dried chilli's ( will be adding to them). Would like to make some chilli sauce but can't find a recipe that lasts very long.

You love chillies more than me Scarlet!!!!!

And you are planning on growing some real hot ones next year!

Personally, I can highly recommend paper lantern, it is a habanero, and last year I had a massive crop from just two plants. I think I put some seeds in the VSP?????

See attached pic of plant - LOADS of pods!!!!!!

Small pumpkin - I make LOADS of chilli sauce, after I bottle it, it usually sits untouched for around 6 -8 weeks in my under stairs cupboard.

Then once opened I store in the fridge (I will then consume a 300ml bottle in around 4 -6 weeks).

I might post a youtube vid at some point, on how I make chilli sauce. (Not very exciting, but could be of use to some)....

HAHA! I am actually in the process of fitting an induction hob, new oven and some new worktops etc.

Although my kitchen is very small.

I might well 'do' a video, once all thats done!

Paper lanterns are awesome scarlet! Did you see all the chillies on that plant from last year? Crazy really.

That chilli sauce sound great. I want to turn my very butch T, brain strain, black naga and ghost chilli's into sauce, because I can't use them quick enough fresh and don't want to dry them and end up playing Russian roulette getting the mixed up with my other dried chilli's

My favourites are my £land 'habaneros', in quotation marks because they look more like jalapenos but heatwise whomp the heck out of any jalapeno I've grown. They are on year 2 and I am very keen to get them through another year so I can save seed. And do padrons count? The crop is amazing and the Russian roulette with them is a genius game.

I love chenzos for the heat and fruity flavour, but they are F1s. My lemon drop just won't die and is very reliable cropping wise though the aftertaste is too acid for me and I am looking forward to trying the rocotos.

Next year I'm growing facing heaven and hot fish chillies to see what they are like. Can't wait!

I'll stop there, I'm getting a bit overenthusiastic!

Over enthusiastic is good! I think you have a similar taste to me- my favourite chillies are Habs and lemon drops and I also grow padrons! I will be growing facing heaven next year I can't wait either...

I love my chillis too, and try to grow as many as I can each year..
Don't think I have any stand out favorites as it depends on what I use them for! For example, you can't beat pickled jalapeños for cheesy nachos and for when we have fajitas for dinner..
I do like Habaneros a lot though and others I'd mention are Anaheim and Hungarian Black Wax which is still cropping away.. Photo to follow..
I have attached a pic of flaked chilli's I made and I have also made chilli jam, and would highly recommend it..

Lemon drop, a pointy yellow one thats self saved and another self saved one that I call fat bangladeshi.

All have different attributes and are good croppers.
