  • Alium Miner, To grow next year or not to

hi there, last year i only grew runner beans and nothing else, this year i grew all sorts, alot of it did supprisingly well...

apart from my leeks which seemed fine earlier in the year, (see picture) but then they got attacked by alium leaf miner and destroyed this october

My question is this, i was planning on growing more onions and shallots next year, should i bother?, whats the chance of them just all getting decimated in spring?

p.s i know the gardens small, stop laughting, and no i'm not going to use fleece or anything either, its far too ugly

    thanks, george.

None, if you net them ...

... I still think you should use netting Can you make it look inoffensive?

Next year I will extend my netting (from Brassicas and a few other small-area crops) to include Leeks and Onions. I don't want to spend all season nurturing a crop to then lose the lot to a pest; disease (like Blight) I can do less about as I don't use fungicides etc. on my crops.

      Hi George

I think the only option is netting, understand you want to keep the veg garden looking neat and tidy but as Kristen says, why grow for something else to eat/distroy.

if you use the right colour netting it becomes almost invisable.

I love a bit of netting, it makes a garden look cared for -what's wrong with it?

I don't find net ugly, it's neat and tidy and ensures something tasty. If you really can't bear it then you'll be limited in what you can grow.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I bought the "green" Scaffolders Debris Netting, first time around. That looks really conspicuous as it is more Turquoise than green since then I have bought black which is almost invisible and blends in well.

Enviromesh is only available in white I think?

Don't laugh, but I was contemplating painting a mural on the side of my pale green enviromesh.I thought a cottage garden scene painted on the side with acrylic paints would look quite startling!

I deliberately chose the green debris netting as the colour reminds me of the Mediterranean sea and make me think of hot sunny days, sitting outside, sipping a glass of wine.
Don't think black netting would have the same effect!

I like the layout of your garden. And the way you've written "Leeks" on the side of your wheelie bin...

Can't help on the leaf miner though. Sorry.

I've got black debris netting it sort of blends in so I don't notice it too much when I look of the kitchen window.
