We were both given packets of 'Black Russian' tomato seeds in our crackers at Christmas and a competition was hatched. He was streets ahead of me - turns out the wonder tomatoes he's been growing and a completely different variety from shop bought plants....

A confession was inevitable as they have just started ripening to a tell-tale red (not black...)
Post a photo! They aren't really a black tomato, the have a dark cast to their shoulders but they also have a " green" look to them. He may be telling the truth

I've picked toms & a cue for lunch. Spuds & sprouting for the boys and chard and beetroot for the OH and my supper.

                • A handful of yellow, juicy, ripe plums...first year with fruit on this tree and they were delicious! Also some raspberries, chillies and the last of my onions. All in all not too bad BUT...and there has to be one or two...no red tomatoes, the few that we have are green and the runners are tiny little things so don't hold out much hope for them!

                  • Been harvesting a lot of carrots lately, four of these baskets to go through the food processor then freezing, plus we've been picking and eating as and when, still another basket or so in the ground for picking and next years seed but I think mice and moles are having a crack at them. Very pleased with the flavour and success rate of them, the Touchon carrot from Real Seeds.

                    • Beans, 6 tomatos and fennel tops.Picked a small melon to see how they are doing-still green inside but good seed formation- I might just pull this melon growing off. It would go a long way to making me feel better about my many failures so far this year!

                          • Yesterday - six cucumbers! Where on earth did they all suddenly sprout from? They're currently sitting in a pile of salt ready for pickling.

Also, a small handful of Sungold toms. Yum.

                            • My plants were straining from the weight of all the chillies they were carrying, so last night I decided to do a mega-harvest! Just a few of my Cayennes and the beautiful Razzamatazz, I'm a very happy grower right now
