Carrots in containers?

Someone had thrown out 3 of those 'blue plastic deep containers' that are supplied by the council to recycle your newspapers etc, I rescued these and wonder if they might be used for growing carrots? They would be easy to protect with Environmesh and already have holes in the bottom?

Any thoughts ? ( or another daft idea)!

Many peeps grow carrots in containers, and the ones you are referring to would be the ideal size and depth in my opinion!

Thanks Deano, I do wonder sometimes what my neighbours think of me! Removing such 'containers', from the rubbish bin store!

Pity they are 'blue', rather than 'green' which would look better on plot!

I sometimes have the same conscious thoughts as people see me climbing in and out of skips!

Or use up all your paint scraps, being artistic/ childish (which ever takes your fancy) and bring even more colour to your plot

We grow most of our veg in recycling bags or containers. All work well

I've grown carrots in assorted containers, and they have done well. I used "spent" potting compost (from potatoes in containers, and rootballs of Tomato plants and the like once pulled from the greenhouse in Autumn) mixed 50:50 with sharp sand.

Mrs K said the best thing was that a container could be dragged near to the back door which made harvesting easy when that one was finished I could then lug another from the veg patch to take its place

My carrots inna trug are amazing. No forking at all and a foot or so long. We had loads last night from a July sowing for belated Christmas dinner.

I grow a fair bit of stuff in containers of any sort and those sound good for carrots.
If you want get some paint or stickers and paint/stick pictures of veg on the sides.

There are lots that can go into a container and easy to put different types of carrots into different ones then see how they do, or simply to harvest at different times.

You don't get many to a bucket but they work out fine. and they're easy to move about.

I do just that, growing carrots in old coucil recycling boxes but mine are black. I start them in the Gh planting 2 seeds per station and three inches apart then prick out the poorest plant when they are big enough. I use fresh bought compost or old potato compost and once outside I net them. Results are excellent. I am having doubts about this theory that carrots need unfertilsed soil after seeing a video of an Irishman who grows wonderful carrots direct in piles of horse manure.

I grow all my carrots in containers (I use 18 inch square pots). They are much easier to move around, and I find a ring of copper tape round the pot keeps the slugs out. My attempts at growing carrots in the ground have been wiped out by slugs and snails before reaching the 4 leaf stage every time.
