          • Ain't we lot sad!

Tell me about it!!! This is my first year of growing veg and having an allotment and WOW!!!! This past four weeks of sun, warm nights and rain has made everything grow like beanstalks...or should that be triffids!

                • "Never again will I allow a single weed to get taller than one inch!!!"

That's an entirely masochistic sentiment . The weeds are only "dangerous" if you let them reproduce, so adjust your aim to be "never will I allow a single weed to flower".

If you can let your weeds grow until then, not only will you have fewer weeds overall (because the biggest ones will out-compete the smaller) but you'll have more material to compost or mulch with, and it'll save you a lot of time too

                  • Good tip about taking a more 'relaxed' view of things and not letting them reproduce. I think I was just shocked at how big they grew in just a short space of time when conditions were right ~ warmth, daylight hours, rain & sun It's certainly brought home to me what plants need. I was fretting a bit at the late spring (it's my first year ever growing veggies) but everything's going great now so next spring I won't panic about getting things in my X date etc

Most of the weeds are sow thistle, chickweed and broad-leaved willowherb. The chickweed is easy to pull out but will it be 'safe' to compost the other two or will they just increase from bits of root etc? I haven't let them develop any seeds at all.

                    • I use all weeds as a weed-suppressing mulch, even bind weed & couch grass. Very few keep on growing after they've been pulled, and it's certainly quicker to "chop n drop" than to make them into compost

                        • Getting towards the end of the hottest July we have experienced since moving to France three years ago. Temperatures have now dropped to a daily max of 23c - 26c, but for three weeks we had max temperatures of between 36c - 41c every day, and no rain. Our water butts were soon empty and water restrictions imposed, no hoses and you could only water vegetables (not flowers!) between 8pm - 8am. We have now had a couple of thunderstorms and the butts are now full again. So the photos below have a very brown hue to them! But we have managed to nurse most plants through and the squash and courgettes loved the heat!
