Hope that was a tongue in cheek comment Bill.

Well I went into the local church and had a quick pray, I asked how long I had got left, the reply came that they had checked their forthcoming arrival list and I was not on that list either! So I do have a bit longer lol.

      • I feel a bit like you, Bill. I put my name down for an allotment 2 years ago and was told I was 17th on the list. There are 20 allotments. I haven't asked them what position I am on the list recently as I am looking after my friend's garden, but I pass the allotments most days and they all look tidy and well loved, so I am not hopeful that I will get one before I am too old to cope with it.

        • I put my name down, um, six years ago? Something like that. Maybe more. I was told the wait was 'long'. In March, a newsletter came through the letterbox appealing for tenants for vacant plots... turns out my name wasn't on the list. But we ended up with a lovely half plot and were on at the end of April. All's Well That Ends Well...

Bill - could you not argue that your name ought to go on the list where it would have been two years ago, rather than starting again?

I've got my eye on the other half of our plot. This end of the allotments was waste ground, with a load of scrap metal, crud and broken glass on, which they scraped off with a digger, piled up on the neighbouring half plot, and covered with soil. So we'd have to hand dig it over and get all the rubbish out.

But I reckon we could take it.... *twitch*

          • I wrote to the council asking to be put on the waiting list for our nearest site nearly 3 years ago. They haven't replied yet, I guess they aren't interested.

Luckily by turning up to the second nearest allotment site one weekend soon after, I was able to sign up for an overgrown plot on the spot. So if the council ever replies I know what to say to them.

I could argue that but I have no proof, it was an online application on their website.Since then there has been a TV prog about Torquay allotments showing what a nasty corrupt lot they are, so maybe I am better off out of it.

                    • October pictures

                      From the garden door

Surprisingly little difference here this month.

                      From the lawn facing south

Hard to take decent photos of this on a sunny day. The tomatoes next to the wormery have gone, as have most of the potatoes - there are just the Sarpo Mira left outside now. Still plenty of carrots plus broccoli and brokali under the net on the right. The square pot behind the fruit cage is piled high with turf from reshaping the lawn - this will go at the bottom of a raised bed which is going to replace the wooden compost bin in the corner.

From the lawn facing north east

The peas have finished and have been replaced with a pole garden of perpetual strawberries which are still giving the odd fruit. Plenty of fruit on the Shirley tomatoes but nothing has turned red yet. The 2 florence fennel plants in front are growing really well.

                      Near the garage wall

Much less potato foliage. Strawberry runners potted up on a shelf over red cabbage. My poor gooseberry bush is next to the hedge, with its leaves completely eaten by sawfly larvae. You can just see the carrots and lettuces in the fruit cage along with the blueberries which are still fruiting.

                      From behind the fruit cage

Most of the courgettes here have finished (the ones nearer the house are still in full flow). A few straggly tomatoes remain along with the cucumbers which have finally decided to fruit, and brassica seedlings under nets. The beans on the tripod have finished but there are some more climbing the archway. The bucket of Charlotte potatoes is still looking happy. Most amazing of all, you can actually see the spring onions! (I can never get the things to grow here).

Pretty happy, really. First pic on the plot there for comparison.

                            • October Part 1

Parts of the plot are definitely in need of some attention

But the Raspberries are still producing....

                              ....and the Fenella Strawberries......

                              ....and the Peas

Got 3 beds of overwintering Onions planted - Shakespeare, Senshyu and Red

What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
                              Pumpkin pi.

                              • October Part 2

DFB's done and removed, to be replaced by Brussel Sprouts. Runner Beans still going well though. Next to the Sweetcorn, where the Pumpkin was is now PSB

Still got a bed of Potatoes with healthy foliage

The plants are looking tired, but still got 2 Melons to harvest

Can't see them very well, but still got quite a few Tomatilloes

Oh and these are what I recovered from my single Pumpkin plant
