Just a couple of pics to show tree prunning, well butchery actually. I had four Hawthorn trees to the left of my plot which are a little dangerous when my grandkids come over. Decided to chop them down so I can tidy the area and have this as an area for flowers.

October
Took these photos today of what's still growing in our garden. My second sowing of runner beans still flowering & producing beans. I've got one good sized spring onion that's still growing with two tiny ones, some rocket & French marigolds. On the table there's more rocket & some garlic chives. The French marigolds have been growing well, flowering for months!Location : Essex

October Continued...
When I cut back my tomato plants I noticed these ladybirds, they've been hibernating on this trellis since the end of August. They're there every day & they don't move,I keep checking. So i'll leave that there & sow meteor peas in the raised bed very soon. Nasturtiums are growing well,my leeks are amongst them in the raised bed, first attempt at growing them,I did it wrong but it was good practise. Yesterday I noticed my Brussels sprouts seeds have germinated, this is them today!Location : Essex

I used to be really good at figuring these sorts of problems out, but when I hit 50 ( a year or two back), I seemed to suffer technology dislexia and struggle to operate the kettle these daysWhat do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?

November - a dull, grey, misty, damp day.
From the garden door
All looking very autumnal.
From the lawn facing south
Veg cage still full of carrots and broccoli, beetroot and corn salad in front. The pot in the growhouse contains winter spinach. Still some lettuces on their shelf in the fruit cage, growing well.
Against the garage wall you can see the new raised bed with the frame over for the gooseberry. The blackcurrant bush is in its pot in there already, I'm waiting for the gooseberry to drop the skeletons of its leaves before I wash its roots, repot it in clean soil and put it under a net to keep off the sawflies.
From the lawn facing north east
White currant and apple tree losing their leaves fast. One brave courgette still struggling on, and buckets of leeks have replaced the tomatoes. The perpetual strawberries in the pole pots haven't produced much fruit - not enough sun to ripen them before they rot.
Near the garage wall
Raspberries still fruiting but a lot of the fruit is rotting in the damp. Strawberries in towers looking worse for wear, unlike the ones on the shelf. The pot on the middle raised bed is an experiment with replanting potato haulms that were still green, but I doubt there is anything edible in there. Carrots and spinach along with the blueberry bushes in the fruit cage.
From behind the fruit cage
Winter brassicas under nets, the straggly remains of a cucumber and a bucket of Christmas potatoes (Charlotte) - the 2nd bucket has died off, which is a puzzle as this one still looks very green. The nasturtiums are slowly taking over the garden.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

November
A few photos taken today in the garden. Onion sets in a couple of places,a trough & the raised bed where the nasturtium has sprung into life, there's thin leeks in there somewhere too I lifted these potatoes today (I think they're Nicola?) & some rocket in a pot. My one spring onion is doing well,I might cut it & leave the root in there to grow again if that's possible, worth trying.Location : Essex

November Continued..
A couple of pictures of my seedlings growing in the blow-away tent. Potted on the Evesham special Brussels sprouts today, when they're big & strong enough they can go in the soil where my runner beans were for the nitrogen benefits. Also there's some lettuce & spring onion seedlings.Attached FilesLocation : Essex

December
Judging by the lack of recent activity on this thread, it looks like most forum members have gone into hibernation for the winter. Looking at this weekend's forecast, I may well be joining them soon!
From the garden door
A few brave antirrhinums still in flower. Lawn looks much neater with its new edging, which will hopefully stop it encroaching on the flower beds. You can just see the brown border edging I've recently added across the veg garden to help stop water run-off. Just creeping into the picture on the left is my lone brokali plant in a bucket - the central spike is nearly ready to harvest.
From the lawn facing south
Lettuces and perpetual strawberries (still in flower) in the growhouse, beetroot and corn salad growing slowly. Broccoli and plenty of carrots left under the netting.
From the lawn facing north east
A couple of buckets of straggly leeks that were planted out way too late but might produce something edible next spring. Fence has had a coat of paint.
Near the garage wall
More leeks, raspberries still trying to produce some fruit (!), carrots under the net, a bucket of spinach and miscellaneous fruit bushes.
From behind the fruit cage
Spring cabbage, kohlrabi, namenia, mizuna, komatsuna, winter spinach and chinese celery under nets with fleece ready to protect the more delicate ones from frost. Wild strawberries still trying to produce some fruit are catching the last few rays of winter sunshine. The fleece on the ground at the far end is only there to stop next door's cat using it as a litter tray.Last edited by Penellype; 02-12-2015, 12:34 PM.A life is like a garden.
