Hello Tryshard.
Welcome to the mad house.
I do some SFG as it suits my very limited space. I make up for lack of space with planters, boxes, hanging baskets, tyres etc.
I don't agree with the SFG about some of the brassicas. The book said 1 per SF but with modern varieties you can actually get 4 cabbages, small kales etc into your 12in square..
You do have to be careful what you put next to them though. Next to cabbages I put carrots, fennel as they let both the light and air in,
If you are reading the American version you could do with trying to translate the pests and diseases as the Americans sometimes have completely different names for things.
One thing I know for sure is that we don't have racoons, at least not in Lincolnshire.
Thanks for the replys - I did search for Square Foot Gardening - but it did not come up. I have grown a small range of veg on and off for years. I have a few raised beds and wanted to make them more productive. I always seem to have spaces.
I'll read the thread and give it a go. I don't want to ne born again I just like the simplicity of the concept.
When you first come on to the 'Vegging Out' page look at the first few permanent threads - SFG and all its pages are there for you to peruse. At the moment its 9th from the top.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Hello Tryshard, nice to meet you
I did SFG for a while. It was very successful for me at the time. I love the way the bed becomes a full on polyculture with a bit of this and a bit of that.
I also found that when I first did it I used his soilmix (compost, vermiculite and topsoil I think) and everything grew like mental.
As time went by and money and time meant I ran out of this or that, my soilmix was less perfectly measured and things did not grow as well.
Also the entire population of neighbourhood cats kept trying to get in there to poo....which is why I gave it up in the end (Bleurgghhh)
Welcome to the vine. Have a good read of the web change how you serch it and books. Also look at companion planting. That would work well with a square ft x
