Paper Seed Pots

Since I am new to the planting of seeds this year. And trying to do it on a budget. Has anyone used newspaper pots to grow seeds, ready to plant out in march?

My local garden centre has a pot / module tray recycling bin; if you want some freebie pots you might be able to find some similarly?

Yoghurt pots and so on will do too.

Rigid pots are better for some things that newspaper ones IMHO.

Paper pots are fine but I found two major drawbacks which has stopped me using them:

1. They take ages to make, even the simple methods. If you need several hundred pots it is easier to find pots thrown away at local tips or recycling places. Just asking friends usually means you can find many dozen for free.

2. If you make them too thin, when you water them the paper tends to give way before you plant them out. If you make them too thick, then the outside takes too long to rot when you plant the whole pot out.

By all means do this, but I think modules are by far an easier way and not expensive, as they are reusable.

Always curious with those (I mean, they ain't free, eh?!) as to whether there is some advantage of using one of those templates tools compared to just using, say, an aerosol can (the lid of which will do for a former for the base, if needed)

I used some pipe we had laying around, then for the 'Dome Slip Cap' I pushed a piece of wood inside the smaller of the two pieces of pipe just to seal the end.

Blimey ... are all those steps really necessary?

I do this:


1. Roll around a can


2. Tuck in the bottom


3. Slide off the can.

No need for tape, nor for a "former" to create the base. Having said that I have, in the past, pressed the bottom onto the can lid, upturned on the bench, before sliding the pot off the can itself.
