The Seed Sowing Thread 2015

Today I sowed 5 Tomato seeds

'Tis early, nay? What's your view on that, or is it some-now and some-later? (don't think you have Lights, but maybe I have mis-remembered that?)

They are in a heated propagator in the greenhouse Kristen so my theory is they get both warmth & light. I do have grow lights but to be honest I can't be faffed setting them up.

I always sow a few early tomatoes too - just for the 'ell of it.
Here are some sown on 16th January, started in the airing cupboard, then put into a heated propagator in the GH, with my weekly sowing of radishes

Sowed many basil seeds & 3 tomato seeds (sweet million) on 2nd February germinating on my fish tank lid,under the light,should be through soon. Too early for my mains. These tom plants are going to be about 5 ft high by the time it's warm enough to go out,maybe,I don't know iv never sown this early in the year...

I'm sure they'll germinate happily enough ), I was more concerned about how big they will be my the time the greenhouse is warm enough, without heating, to plant them out. Never done an experiment, but I wonder if earlier-sown are ore leggy such that they have fewer trusses-to-roof too? perhaps later-sown are tighter-noded (is that a word?!) and maybe they start flowering with fewer leaf pairs? ... Too many questions, sorry!!

I sow mine around 15 February, under lights and with some warmth (10C-16C, more on sunny Spring days Yay!), and I reckon they are 5' tall by the time they are planted out in the greenhouse in mid May.

Sowed some cauliflower today...ive never had much success in previous years, but fingers crossed for this year

I'm sowing to me sowing schedule as I always do ... I hope not to read lots of "Disappointed" threads later in the season, as I have done in previous years 10C minimum nights from now on would salvage a lot of hopes

I never had any good'uns until I grew Candid Charm F1, with which I have had good success every year. Its a type that grows its leaves to a point, over the curd, rather than having an exposed curd. No idea if that is why I have been more successful, as Candid Charm is the only variety that I have grown which does that, but maybe that type is "easier"?

I sow 4 each fortnight (starting 01-March, not yet!!), and pot on to 9cm and then plant out

Thanks for that tip - The ones I sowed will stay in the polytunnel until reasonably late- they are under a cloche in the tunnel at present so hopefully that's enough.

I've only sowed the ones I got free with a magazine - but that's a useful steer on the Candid Charm variety

I've sown nothing yet Stan,so don't panic! I don't have greenhouse, but do start things off inside.

Now I'm panicking!

I havent started yet. I started on 16/02/14 so I have time yet.

Potatoes are chitting and I thnk I will start onion seeds this week.
The onions I grew from seed before stored a lot better than any of the sets i have grown, so seeds this year for me.

In the past I have bought my seed in the Autumn sales - 50p a packet, so worth buying "posh" seed then - I get Cucumber seed and the like, 4 seeds in a packet well over £1 each, in the 50p-a-packet sale too
