  • The Seed Sowing Thread 2015

Its the start of the Growing year and we're all anxious to start sowing and feel soil beneath our fingernails. So how about telling us which seeds you've sown each day, as a gentle reminder to start rummaging for them in your seed stash

    The Seed Sowing Thread 2015

I am going to sow seeds in Seed Pellets like Jiffy 7, I have never used them before - Are they just a waste of money and what size is best for what etc.

    Opinions please

Hi TH, I've used them but found they dried out too fast. Others may prefer them though.

Yesterday sowed some radish, and also oriental poppy seeds. Tried them last year and not one germinated, so having another go. They are T&M seeds though, and I never seem to do so well with them, but they were only 50p in the Wyv@le autumn sale, so not much lost if they don't start.

A whole pack of Facing Heaven chillies from the VSP - tried a few of them last year and they didn't germinate. This year the lot is in...and my fingers are firmly crossed!

Also sowed cress (does that even count?) and some rocket, peas & basil for indoor munching.

2nd week of january I sowed:

-load of that Suttons lavender from seed
-couple of pots of some aubergine (redondo?) in an unheated greenhouse which was a complete waste of time really wasnt it? Just going to get leggy at best, or probably die from frost. Might do it again in a month on a windowsill inside.
-Discounted garlic in cells. You can get garlic for 50p a pack at some places like Squires right now; that's for 1 or 2 bulbs
-whole row of Parsnips from pound shop (said january on packet). White Gem?
-Loads of wild/alpin strawberries. Regina I think

Today I sowed 8 kinds of sweet pea. They will sit in my study until they germinate then go into the cold greenhouse.

I really sense the growing (no pun intended) excitement of a new year starting and getting seeds started on their journey.....

Yep It's around this time of the year that I start sowing a few "experimental" ones that I convince myself is no biggie if I do lose them for some reason or other.. Does it happen that way?
                            No!!
Sow loads, and hope they all make it...Curse myself when I can't bring myself to admit some are not going to germinate, or else they all have germinated and have to try fit them somewhere..
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

                            ...utterly nutterly

2 tomato Shirley seeds sown and 2 sideshoots potted up. I wondered if it was worth sowing the seeds since I have a supply of sideshoots, but decided I would anyway. When I run out of windowsill space I may regret it.

Having just had a count of my tomato plants (all Shirley), if both seeds germinate and all the sideshoots root, I already have 14
