The Seed Sowing Thread 2015

I've got my potatoes (Accent, Desiree and Cara) chitting happily away. I'm still waiting for a delivery of Salad Blues.

On Monday, I planted my tomato (Nectar, Tigrella, Marmande and San Marzano) and chili (Rodeo, Lemon Drop, Cayenne, Orange Habanero) seeds. I like to give them a lot of time at home, and last year my better established January/February sowings did much better than the late March sowing, which never really caught up.

Sowed today;
1. 60 cell tray of Onion, 'Ramata di Milano'
2. 60 cell tray of Onion, 'Tondo Musona' can be grown as a bunching onion.
3. 60 cell tray of Shallots, 30 each 'Banana' & 'Prisma F1'
4. 40 cell tray of Onion, 20 'Bedfordshire Champion' & 'Ramata di Milano' (Thought I had more Bedfordshire Champion seeds left!
Just remembered, sowed some early turnip, 'Rapa Bianca' & 'Purple Top Milan' in two 10ft(3m) rows.

Scotch bonnet and Thai chillies in a propagator on the windowsill. Peas direct outside, fingers crossed.

Sowing

Last week I started the following in old milk cartons on the window cill in a conservatory:

2 types of tomato (Cherry and Moneymaker)
Leeks
Anaheim chilli's
sprouts
lavender
sweat pea
night stock

Also bought some early spuds that have been chitted, they are in containers in the garden with fleece over them to keep them warm.

In a week or two I hope to get a second batch of seeds going so we have a cycle of crops.

Yesterday sowed; 20 seeds of sweet pepper 'King of the North', 20 seeds of sweet pepper 'California Wonder', 25 seeds of geranium F2 super hybrid mix & 12 seeds of geranium 'Maverick Star'. All on windowsill. Today I'm planning & thinking about beneficial insects & what they want in my garden

Everyone seems to be sowing thousands of each seed and here I am having planted one of everything I've sowed so far! Do people just have massive plots or am I the only one who doesn't like the lack of humanity in the survival of the fittest model of seed raising?

I've got onions, shallots and garlic down outside and peppers, toms, aubergine and beetroot in the propogator... broad beans are sat chilling in the greenhouse and I can't decide when to plant them out.

First batch of seeds planted

Got my Black Beauty Eggplant (first time from seed) and my peppers Jalapeno,Hungarian Yellow Wax,
Marconi Red and Green Bell seeds planted and awaiting germination. Fingers crossed as always.

Are they strip lights? If so I'm be inclined to get the tray of pots propped up on some blocks - ideally to get the leaves of the plant within 2" of the lamps (close enough for maximum light "power" without any heat from the lamps burning them - shouldn't be a problem with Tubes / LEDs but would be with discharge type of lamps.

Inverse-square law, sadly. Double the distance from the lights to the plants and the "power" of the light reduces to 1/4 4x the distance and power reduces to 1/16th

Hi kirsten, To be honest ive been really afriad of frying them, It is my old marine fish tank light that I used to grow corals with so quite powerful, its got 6 tubes with individual recflectors and a cooling fan to keep them operating at the highest output, at the moment as they are seedlings im only running 4 tubes.

I actually have a PAR light meter so can measure the light they get but havent bothered yet and to be honest I dont know what numbers to aim for anyway.

25th february-sowed 6 Arran Pilot potato seeds in bags. They're indoors by the patio doors at the moment. Bit draughty there so they're cool

Hurray! 3 Pentland Javelins inna bag, sitting on my kitchen floor. Early onward peas tucked up in some compost too and sweet peas are soaking in a cup in front of me.

Yes, fair point. If you can hold the back of your hand to the lights, and it doesn't feel "hot" (warm is OK), then the plants will be happy at that distance too. Be careful as the plants grow as they will get closer to the lights unless you move them away, obviously
