  • Lettuce
    Beetroot
Dwarf french beans - trying for an early crop under glass

All my toms are up and have spent the last two days sunning theirselves in the GH. The temps drop fast though so they were back indoors by 5 this evening

      • Leeks - Musselburgh (?)
        Beetroot
        More sweetcorn
        Mangetout
Potted a pound shop gooseberry bush (worth a try, eh?)

My tomatoes are also all up but sowed somewhat erratically. Couldn't bear a cull so have repotted a few - hope they survive!

        • spinach, beetroot (boltardy, chioggia, cheltenham green top) and cape gooseberries sown. I may for once be actually on schedule with my sowing. That's a first! That's until I go to the Edible Garden Show tomorrow and stuff my pockets with more packets of seeds...

Considering ordering some Physalis seeds. I love them so much. I've heard they're easier than toms - is that true? Do you grow them outdoors?

              • The dwarf ones are speedier, but their berries are much sweeter. I grew mine outside. The outside (giant) ones took forever to fruit and I didn't get many ripe ones. As long as the berries have got big enough, they will continue to ripen on the giant onesif you pull the entire plant and put it on the shed, which is what I did in November and was eating 'fresh' berries in December and January.

I find they need an early start to come to anything - you might have missed it if you don't have anything like a greenhouse to bring them on in.

Only a blow away and a warm windowsill Might give a few seeds a chance anyway, worth a shot!

                  • Today I sowed

                    Leek pandora
                    Sprout rubine
                    Summer purple sprouting broccolli
                    120 hurst greenshaft peas
                    Romanesco

as well as rudbeckia and helichyrsum flower seeds

On pure impulse I bought butternut squash and courgette seedlings from homebase....far, far too early in the season, I wasn't planning on even sowing mine till the end of April. But I couldn't seem to stop myself.....

The best crop I ever had was my first attempt when I only had a windowsill and a blowaway. Have tried several times since and results have never been as good

I think they need a long growing season, I've always sown in feb and kept indoors on the windowsill
