  • compost again

It's that time of year for, at least me, to buy compost and try to get it to warm up a bit by stacking it it the polytunnel for a few week/months.
My norm is 10x 125 litres of bqs finest, was wondering if anyone has info on this years compost, anyone tried it maybe under grow lights and could give their views on it?.
My local bq bolton, has only about 60/70 bags in the yard, this is unusual as it's normally overflowing with last yrs leftovers, but there's absolutley nothing on the shelves that usually go 3 or 4 high. Just wondering if theyr'e doing the decent thing and gonna get totally fresh in this year ?
Anyone used it this ear and has anthing good or bad to say about it?. Anything else being recommended this year instead?.

I would think that this years batch as yet to arrive, if so I would hang fire until it does as the quality can change from year to year. I seem to remember that people reported that last years batch was good, maybe that's why there is not much left.

I normally wouldn't go past B&Q's compost but there was a battered clothes peg in the last bag. Don't know about anyone else but I don't support battering clothes pegs and then hiding them in bags of compost

Had a bag of b&q compost last year which was so bad I had to take it back. Never again. I went and bought some from local garden centre, a little more expensive but 5 times better.

I have gone onto Jacks Magic from the local GC. 5 quid a bag.

I tend to get the Westland MPC which my local garden centre usually has an offer on for 3 bags for £10. The individual bags are £4.99 I think. I used to use Levington but had a very bad experience a couple of years ago when almost nothing would grow in it for some reason. I tried a few bags of the B&Q compost last year as it was cheaper, but I wasn't that keen on it - I found it tended to dry out and was difficult to wet again.

I too use Westland's Jack's Magic I find it the best compost out there. Yes it has peat in it but can't find one that competes directly with it. I will also be trying New Horizon Peat Free Compost this year and see what happens as apparently thats meant to be good too

I use New Horizon's multi purpose and have done for quite a few years. I've had no issues with it, in fact some reduced peat compost I bought when I couldn't get any was awful.

Well I have noticed I have no Jack's Magic Compost left I brought some Bulrush Professional Multi-Purpose compost this morning to try, it says it's about 55% peat so hopefully it should be good . Will get some more Jack's Magic too though I think as I know what it's like
