Help with Peat moss please

I am struggling to get any soil for my seed cells.

At the moment all I can get is a universal compost, which is too "chunky"

Or peat moss, I haven't used this before. Is it ok for starting off my seeds?

I asked in my Spanglish if it was ok in the garden Center and was told yes, brought home a big bag and it seems...... well i don't know how to describe it, but doesn't seem fine enough.

Should I maybe mix it. I have used peat pellets, is it the same?

Grrrrr, don't know what to do and so excited about planting today.

I guess your universal compost is a Spanish equivalent of multipurpose compost in the UK. Could you sieve it to get the worst of the lumps out? I don't use peat but for seeds I think I would mix something in to aid drainage, like horticultural grit or perlite. No idea what the Spanish for perlite is!

does it feel like a big root ball? If that were me I'd try and bang it about in a smaller bag then sieve it and try and add some perlite or vermiculite

You can still use peat but you'd have to start feeding earlier

Lisa, I think the other grapes were on about riddling you MPC not the moss.

No can't sieve it. I will take a pic

it looks sieveable to me. You can get very cheap plastic seives which will do the business. I keep the rough stuff and pop that into the bottom of bigger pots later

Thanks, I broke it up and used it. I just don't know how good it is for the seed

Hi Lisabolt, I always mix course sand with any compost I use this helps keep it open, also if the peat based compost dries out squirt some washing up liquid over it then mix it in, this helps it absorb water, I think it breaks down some oils that form
