Plantjng Asparagus Crowns

I was reading up on Asparagus growing and, to cut a long story short - I have mistakenly presumed that now is the time to plant asparagus, where in fact it is time to sow from seed.

Anyway, I have stupidly ordered and recieved 10 crowns - but I'm now unsure what to do with them now.

Should I plant them out and hope for the best (I have a bed prepared at the allotment) or, look at some way of storing them until Spring arrives ?

Presumably they are bare rooted. I would have thought they were ok to plant now, with the usual proviso that your ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. I've got some asparagus to move as was going to do it soonish, so I hope I'm right! Were there any planting instructions to go with them?

Yes bare-rooted and No instructions included.

I'm just going to plant them today and take my chances. I'll cover the area with fleece and some cardboard - although with the 'trough method' of planting, it may be a bit tricky.

Get them planted - they will be fine. They won't start growing spears until it warms up so shouldn't need any extra protection.

Just make sure you cover the crowns with three or four inches of soil.

Make sure they have good drainage or they are protected from a lot of rain as it doesn't take much rain to kill 'em.
I lost 18 new crowns last winter, the other 2 were eaten by ?

No - was up the plot today and decided where I I planned to put them was a stupid move.

It's the permanent aspect of them that, when it comes to deciding on their spot - I struggle with.

Anyway, I 'manned up', have decided where they're going and I'm going to plant on Tuesday - hopefully they're still alive.

fishpond overid the question why I asked! they do indeed need good drainage! Lots of grit in the bed you are growing them in! they are substantial plants once on there way too! n need a little "Nurturing"



and given the fact you can't harvest for the first two years once set up!

A lot of time getting it right from the offset will pay dividends!

This Crop if set up right first time! is gunna give you maybe a 25 year return!
