  • Multi-purpose Compost Prices 2015

Have just been doing a quick price comparison on MPC. Obviously I don't know what the quality is like but the results read like this:

    Best Prices.

    H0mebase - 8p/Lt
    A1di - 6.2p/Lt
    B4M - 5.95p/Lt
    B4Q - 5.38p/Lt
    L1dl - 5.16p/Lt which equates to their 25Lt bag for £1.29.

Obviously there are more stores which I didn't check so if you come across any cheaper, moi would be obliged. Ta muchly.

Price for me is a huge part of how I decide which compost to go with but usually the 3 bags for x amount real me in and I bite, despite realising after it isn't always cheaper.
I bought a small bag from pound stretcher the other day just to top up my stocks. Can't remember the price, think it was £1.50 for a 30l bag (give or take on the price and amount. It's horrible. Full of huge twigs and really really 'bity. It even contained some of the biodegradable bags.. First time I've been dissatisfied with a compost product.

Presumably these are peat based composts. I don't use peat based compost and use the New Horizon MPC. Last time I bought some it was 3 for 2, 56 litre bags for £5.99 each. Works out about 7p a litre.

I don't want to use peat either and generally use the New Horizon stuff too. One thing I have found since I started boycotting peat is that the non peat ones are more variable and the bad ones are far worse then the pest based ones. Bought an wn brand from B&Q or Home are once and it was terrible, although in theory cheaper I had to compost so many twigs that it must have cost more in the long run,

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I used the B&Q compost like season, very good results but being heavy on peat it does dry up and takes alot to get it back wet.

Id probably mix in some soil based compost or water crystals/vermiculite etc to retain moisture better

Most of the big boys seem to use coconut fibre or wood based compost these days. I could be wrong though of course, in which case a more experienced grape is welcome to correct me

Bought 3 bags of New H0rizon for £12 at Wyev@le today - cheeky monkeys at NH have kept the price the same as last year... but reduced the bag size from 56l to 50l.

I'll report back on this year's product quality - as Alison says, it can vary year on year.

                      Edit: sorry - for clarity, that's 8p/lt

J T F have four 70l bags for £12 which works out to about 4.5p per litre. So far it's been reasonably Good stuff and I usually don't have to bother riddling it.

I might have to pick a few of the wicks bags up. Anyone tried it?
