This gets very strange I first looked into NH MPC over a year ago and the data then said it contain coir, one of the reasons I put it to one side.

The info I received from them today does back that up Pots. I guess the recipe may change year to year depending on what is available.

Best advice is to contact Sinclair (Info@william-sinclair.co.uk) and ask - they will tell you.

They also assured me that the missing PDF files will be on the site soon (the ones that they emailed me earlier). I did reply and point out that the one they titled for the MPC said 'Growbag' inside the file and the reponse was thus:

Yes the growbag/multi purpose are essentially the same product
the Vegetable compost has the same ingredients but it will be different recipe - ie percentages of ingredients/fertiliser rates contained within, we do not give out this information.

My understanding is that the top 4 products on this page all contain Coir:

The 5th one (New Horizon Garden Compost) does not contain Coir.

If that's true and they've recently changed it then that is a real shame. Will have a look at the packaging next time I'm at the garden centre to see if it's different to the stuff I have about half a bag of in the shed - interestingly enough somebody mentioned they'd changed the size of the bags when they recently bought some, wonder if those bags have a different composition?!?

That could well be so Alison, maybe that's why the full details are not yet on their site. I have just checked my gardening diary and it was over two years ago when I last checked their products. There could have been two or three changes in between but it looks like they are back to using coir at this time.

BM that article dated 02/03/12 might explain why the manufactures have stated to push coir again, they were going all out for a better quality product. But there is still the problem with the large carbon footprint to consider.

I am also beginning to wonder if the peat free plans have been put on the back burner, we don't seem to hear much about it these days and the commercial growers were supposed to be peat free by this year. With the cost of new plant to accommodate non peat production I would have thought we would have heard something by now.

Managed to pick up two bags today for £2.49. Not sure why it was so cheap.

Wyevale clear out perhaps - new packaging and size on the horizon.

I'm sure you know but Composted Farmyard Manure is a conditioner, not a part feed as per MPC.

I know I use it to dress my raised veg beds - Tops them up, improves soil condition and feeds all in one.

I got a James Arthur something one. £6.99 for 100 litres. Used it in my strawberry bed and is very nice compost, no twiggy bits at all. But it does weigh an absolute tonne.

I just got 4 bags of 50 litres Miracle Grow compost for £12 from JTF (sorry VC)

I say I, but someone else went there to get washing powder and loo rolls and brought me 4 bags of compost.

Yep Jay, picked four up from the Hucknall branch today, just couldn't turn it down at that price. I have had a look and it seems good stuff too.

Cheap isn't always best

I've used really cheap compost in the past and I've definitely found that even if I pay a couple of quid more I'm getting better quality!
My garden has never looked better!

Sainsbugs own 33ltr grow bags reduced from 2-99 to 1-99 about 70% peat. Bought a couple to use the compost elsewhere and have to say it looks good stuff. No twigs etc, lovely dark colour and even smells good.

125l from B and Q, £6.73. Got myself 2 yesterday.

Have tried various types and some have done very bad almost killing the plants. Gone back to a peat based compost called Mother Earth. The company that I buy the stuff recommended this to me several years ago and they sell in excess of 40,000 bags per year with no complaints.
Cost comes way down the line after quality and reliability for me. Buy about 30 to 40 bags per year.
Tried non peat based by well know names but never found one that was not a bit twiggy.
