Can you keep compost for a year or more, as I thought the chemicals in them changed over time.

I have some compost that I have no idea how old it is. Every year my used compost gets riddled, stored over winter, sweetened with some 7-7-7 fertiliser in spring and then reused.
The only compost I dispense with is if it has had some kind of pest or disease in it.Potty by name Potty by nature.

Thanks Potty, I should have asked unused compost, as I was told never to use old stock from the likes of the big hardware stores as the feeding added to the compost started to break down, such as nitrate of ammonia which is a feed changes to ammoniam nitrate which burns seeds etc.it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I recently took a trip to my local Lidl to check out their compost after reading some positive comments about what they had to offer, on arriving they only had one type available - a peat based compost but I thought that I'd give it a go all the same - what a mistake! Full of all kinds of rubbish ranging from small twigs to a piece of 2" wide timber... pieces of plastic and a 6" bent screw. Not impressed.
After talking with my neighbour about my experience he suggested that I took a visit to a local builders merchants as they sold a compost which was the best that he'd found - this was made by a company called Melcourt.
I brought a couple of 70L bags, which were priced at around £6 - £7 each (cant remember the exact cost) but this is a pleasure to work with, minimal sieving is required to the point that I don't even bother now.
I'm interested to hear if anyone else has used Melcourt products before?

I got mine, this year, after a search on Gumtree - local builder's merchants were selling builders' dumpy bags of compost for £35 delivered - works out about 4p per litre (just under 1 cubic metre of compost in the bag). It's not suitable for seed sowing until sieved, but it's done a great job for filling my pots and adding a mulch to my raspberry bed. It's not peat free, although the content doesn't seem very high. Pretty pleased!
Previously had bqs earlier in the year, the 125l bags, and found it to be pretty decent, and one of the cheapest I could find. Killer to try to lift the bags into the car boot though!

Just got this from my local B and M Store. Three 70 ltr bags for £10. So i got 4. (see attachment at the end of post as i havnt worked out how to place the picture where i want it in the post)
Anyone know if it's any good or can they find anything online about it because i cant.
The reason i got this one was because they didn't have this one in stock...
