Hmm, very interesting VC. Particularly that they mention Levington MPC as being very variable. I used this regularly for years until about 3 years ago when I suddenly found that most of my seeds hardly grew at all. I mentioned this to the owner of the local garden centre and he said he had stopped buying it because he had had so many complaints, and he recommended Westland instead. I have not had any issues with the Westland Gro-sure MPC.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

This is a great thread, thanks!
Thought I'd add my 1p worth as I've been using coir since I started (container) growing a few years back.
I sow all my small seeds (tomatillo, chili, tomato, dill, perilla) in coir pellets because I realised early that I'm rubbish at pricking out and replanting seedlings. With the pellet you put the whole thing in a pot when roots appear. I use the Botanico brand that I buy in bulk when they're on sale, usually works out at 3p a pellet. I know conditions and seed quality are important, but I'm disappointed if I get less than 70% germination. They do not however work very well for larger seeds like aubergine or courgette.
I also use the coir blocks too but that is more a practical think for me. I don't drive so getting compost is the most hassle I have in a growing season. To make my mpc go further, I hydrate a block of coir and mix about 70:30 MPC:coir. I usually add some slow release granules and maybe vermiculite or perlite depending on what it's for. That mix has always done really well for me.
I've tried growing in 100% coir in the past but for me it doesn't give adequate support for a plant and the water retention is wrong. I have seen some (mainly American) websites that recommend a 50:50 coir:vermiculite mix but haven't tried it.

With the excitement of Jack's Magic being on sale, I though I would bump this thread for anyone considering buying compost.sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

I'm using a new bag of Westland MPC and it is completely different from last year's which had a lot of greyish fibrous stuff in it. This year's looks much more peaty/woody in texture.

It does look a lot darker Pene, I wonder if it has more peat content.sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

I think it must have, BM. The bags are identical, but it does say on the back that it is a peat based compost. I feel bad using peat, but I have never found anything else that does the job as well.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy
