  • Caking Seed Compost

Anyone have any tips on how to avoid seed compost caking. This years John Innes is proving particularly problematic. Starting to lose seedlings.

Do you water from the top or the bottom? Watering from the bottom seems to make it less worse. JI compost is quite prone to it, I find. You could try covering the seeds with vermiculite rather than the seed compost.

I found that the John Innes stuff is prone to that, would suggest that could be part of the problem although to be fair it's probably about 20 years ago when I last used it.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I never used to have this problem, but I do now. I think the loam they are using is stickier / more clay content than it used to be.

Can't say I've had that problem, but I've been reusing my bags of JI Seed compost for years ... I just microwave it before using it again.

My seedlings are not in it for very long, maybe a couple of weeks max after germination before being pricked out, that might make a difference?

I also cover any small seed with vermiculite, which perhaps protects the surface somewhat?

And I only water from the bottom - standing the seed tray/container in a tray of water for 5 minutes, or standing it on capillary matting.
