Asparagus question

Hi guys,
Started these last year from seed, were doing OK, looked good throughout the winter, fresh tips coming up but over the last 3/4 weeks they have lost their vigour, only 1 tip has come up.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

My asparagus bed looks empty now and has since the start of winter when I cut the old stems back. I expect the first tips to show soonish.

I thought the asparagus season started in April ?

Seems early to me too - although Essex probably a bit earlier than here and quite possibly lighter land too. I suggest sit & wait a bit

Not sure about seed sown and planted in year 1 - might be fine, but when I grew mine from seed I kept them in pots until Spring of Year 2 and then planted them similarly to crowns - roots splayed out Spider-like, and on a bed of sand etc. That said, I have no knowledge as to whether that is important and I'm on very heavy clay here.

I'm going to grow some more this year and will keep some in pots as Kristen has done, referencing my post http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ml#post1328869

I'm thinking that the ones in pots could do better as they will be in a kinder environment for the first year.

What sized pots did you put them in Kristen?

Asparagus? I think I aimed for 2L but only had 1L for some ... 2L definitely better!!

Can anyone tell me what to do - If anything - With this asparagus?

This is the first lot I've grown and so the first time I've seen it like this at this time of year.
