Feed onions, leeks and garlic.

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to growing veg and still learning from previous mistakes. I have had 3x unsuccessful growing years for leeks, producing only pencil thin ones, and last year getting rust too. Similarly, onions are more like large spring onions. This year I was going to have a go at liquid feeding them every 2 weeks with a general veg fertiliser. Would this be OK or should I consider BFB? My garlic is coming on a treat, I have just applied a few handfuls of growmore - is it best to leave be now or again liquid feed?

You don't need anything else if you've applied Growmore (a manmade version of BFB)
Too many nitrates in the groundwater is what poisons rivers. Follow the pack instructions: more isn't better.

I grow Malabar leeks now because we get awful rust here, and they claim to be rust resistant. Have to say that last year's leeks, whilst not huge, are certainly almost rust free .

Onions like a similar fertiliser to Potato's but a slightly lower dosage. i.e. Growmore doesn't have enough K

Onions and leeks are gross feeders so the ground they are planted in needs to be really really fertile. Dig in as much fym as you can get your hands on and also throw on a handful of growmore or similar per squ yard as you dig over the plot. You will see the difference
