  • Beetroot confusion

I've sown some boltardy beetroot indoors in an unheated propagator and they are just about poking their heads up through the soil.
The confusion lies as from I've read they can be sown March and April direct, but also from what I've read they need protection from frost.
So what am I best doing? Keeping them indoors with the lid off or, placing them in the unheated greenhouse before transplanting after frost or what?
Darn seed packets are so confusing

I would go with unheated greenhouse. They will get too far ahead of themselves if they have extra heat.

I had a look in my Joy Larkcom bible

Only round types suitable for starting in modules
Plant out (8" apart) when seedlings about 2" high
      Germination poor below 7C
Liable to Bolt if cold stressed - e.g. sown early in cold conditions

SO doesn't sound like it want "room temperature" type conditions.

Thank you. I'll have them out tomorrow in that case into the greenhouse

A hard frost will kill beetroot seedlings, but you ought to be OK in an unheated greenhouse at this time of year unless something really unseasonal occurs.

I've got some out which I'll grow in containers for an early crop. Will sow my plot ones in modules in two weeks.

Slight issue. Just gone into the greenhouse and it is red hot already. Will it be too warm in that case and maybe outside of the greenhouse during day and inside at night?

Open the vents in the greenhouse to cool it down?

Seedlings will be happier in the greenhouse as they won't have to fight against wind / breeze etc.

Some heat during the day, with good light too, won't matter - but ideally no more than 20C-ish
