  • Mushroom kit

    Hi,

I came across one of these and I was wondering if anyone has tried them before ? how much would you harvest out of it, would it be cheaper than the supermarkets ? The kit is about £10 it says that you can get a couple of pickings ( that doesn't sound cheap to me ) but maybe I got it wrong ...

If it's the ones in cardboard boxes, I have tried them twice & harvested a grand total of zero mushrooms............. Everyone has something they can't grow, maybe mushrooms is mine..........

I tried one once - had 3 mushrooms. I doubt that you'd grow £10 worth of mushrooms - but I may be wrong. It won't be the first time

OH got one, got a small crop but not worth while. Not bothered since and buy standard mushrooms and forage for wild ones.

I got lots of mushrooms with mine when I had one. No sooner as I took them there was more growing.

May depends on the brand / storage. OH's was a gift and I suspect it may have on the shelf a while. The soul was like dust and if it cost £10 as the one earlier in the thread then you can buy a lot of mushrooms for that.

I think storage and freshness is key. I wouldn't buy one from the Tin Shed Boxshifters as the temperature in them fluctuates wildly, and the boxes may have been there for ages (a Best Before date on that product would help ...)

The ones I have bought Mail Order (for types more unusual than just Button Mushrooms) have done well, but carriage cost for the weight of mushroom boxes is significant ...

I tried one last year and got nothing. I then threw the contents on the veg patch, and three weeks later had three mushrooms, so there is a chance my lack of patience was to blame rather than the product.

I've had reasonable luck with mushroom kits, but I wouldn't do it as a money saving exercise lol
