Tomato problems

Hi all

Some of the leaves on one of my tumbling toms seem to be "dying off". I've added a picture for you to see, anyone got any ideas? It's been grown under lights if that helps?

How close to the lights are they Rhys & are the lights warm/hot to the touch. They look scorched to me.I hope it is nothing more serious.

I thought that too, but are quite far away from the lights and its happening on other leaves too, the light are CFL so not really hot, hope it's not a virus

Only thing you can do is take off the affected leaves & see what happens. Make sure you water from the bottom, don't spray them....good luck.

It doesn't look like a virus too me. They look scorched or lacking in water to me. How are you watering them?

Watering every few days, if it helps it seems to be happening to the older growth rather than the newer growth? It starts off like the picture I just uploaded then seems to spread across the leaf.

Did you grow from seed or buy plants?

Are you using new sterile compost?

Are they in a moist atmosphere?

Sorry for all the questions but the answers may give a clue as to the problem.

The problem with unhealthy plants is they can drive you crazy so if you are unhappy you need to decide if you want to re-sow some more. If you want driving even more crazy have a look at this:

Grown from seed

Yes brand new compost, used it on my chilli + cucumber + other toms which seem to be fine.

No just got a few cukes + toms in my spare room under lights.

They look scorched to me too, but seems improbable if lower leaves nowhere near the light.

Air too dry perhaps? Depending on where they are maybe the air is too dry in the room? Seems fairly unlikely to me too as if they are in your house that dryness of air would probably have you reaching for a Chapstick for split lips! Worth misting them with a sprayer a couple of times a day though.

I don't think it looks like insufficient light, but it might be. Have they got loads of light(s) or just one or two bulbs "nearby" ?

I had some in the conservatory a few years ago which got scorched like that (and sadly subsequently died ) a number of years ago. The chillies and peppers were fine and thrived in it though. That was probably only about this time of year as it was in the days when I sowed earlier (only just sowed this year) and I had time to sow again which has actually worked out much better.

Could it be that when the plant was younger,the leaves got splashed,then the light scorched them,as the new growths ok? I would also take off the affected leaves as said before. I sometimes have to remove lower leaves,have you fed them yet? Fed mine the other day sowed feb 2nd

The lights are pretty close, only a few inches above the plant so don't think light is the problem.

This looks the most likely scenario that they got splashed when being watered. I can't see no problem with the new growth. Haven't fed them yet, only about 3 inches tall so usually wait until they set the first truss then feed them.

Mine are in their little pots for so long the leaves start going yellow if I don't feed the compost they're in,it runs out of nutrients after a while. I use m1racle grow plant food (I did a test once to see the difference that particular plant food makes & it did double the size of some antirrhinums!) Then I swap to tomorite after flowering.
