  • Welsh onions

I bought at a stall in a local bizzare some Welsh oinions in a pot. I have never heard of them but they seem very good at producing through the winter as you can use the leaves in salad etc. they also make nice flowers. i am thinking of planting them in the soil but perhaps that would limit my veg growing because some plants dont do well near oinions.

Has anyone got any experience on how best to grow, pot or soil ? I like having the variety of oinion family and I am now growing spring onion, baby leeks, wild garlic, garlic chives, chives and just sown some onion seeds.

Grow them like chives. They form a clump eventually.

Should be fine, When the clump is big enough, you can split it and replant into more pots or the ground.

I grow welsh onions, chives and garlic chives as food and flowers. A small amount of each is kept under control for eating and the rest is shoved (sorry I mean carefully planted) at the bottom of trees, in the flower beds etc to be left to flower. Putting them in a pot as a container crop also works well.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Along with chives and wild garlic (ramsons) they are a great source of early fresh food. All three are very easy to grow and can usually give you something fresh and green to put in a sandwich or salad as early as March.

Is it normal for the leaves to be turning pale green/yellow this time of year ? If not, what should I do as they are in a pot.

Mine are looking a little pale and a few are flowering. Perhaps give some feed and top up your pot with a little fresh compost?

The compost is only a few weeks old, topped with horticultual grit to seal in moisture. I don't want to have to dig it out. Can I just add chicken manure on the top ?

I bought some Welsh onion seeds and sowed them at the beginning of April.

                      They didn't grow

Well now they are even worse. The tops of the last 2 stems are yellowing. No fresh new growth
