I prefer to make my own too (much nicer and self sufficient) and find that any of the bollotti types work and have used the large runner beans a bit too (can't remember the name but got them from Real Seeds, massive white beans).

Can't help I'm afraid as I think baked beans are the devil's own food, despite my family trying to persuade me otherwise. Hope someone gives you a better answer!

Any saved bean seeds,they taste more or less the same regardless of size,if it's the smaller size and color your after,the nearest i can think of are,blue lake,yellow french climbers,cobra and some of the dwarf bean seeds,cheroke trail of tears are smaller but dark brown,

I think they are called 'gigante'- I have got some but am not sure when to sow.
No matter:the allotment is lovely, the tadpoles have legs, my sea kale has germinated and I am glad to be home.

Sow them the same time as normal runners and Frenchies, in my case that's in about a months time.

Though are you attempting to replicate heinz or make something similiar. I often attempt similiar. This then means i can grab any random bean of my fancy and spruce it up however i fancy at the time.
We use haricot beans too.
Homemade are much less sugary and more tomatoey ....really yummy with finely chopped red peppers too!
I stopped buying Heinz a few years ago as my sweet tooth isn't so sweet anymore since being out here.
When we do buy baked beans , I actually much prefer Te$ co's value beans these days.
