my poor brassica

Few days ago I lost some brassica that were in the greenhouse because I forgot to cover them with fleece at night and some kind of frost killed them( I was busy at work and forgot about them. ) last night I cover them up to keep them warm and this morning been off work after a busy bank holiday at the restaurant I went to the allotment to plant the spuds amd do some other job and now on my way back home I've seen my greenhouse seemed and iwent out and find the left brassica baked under the fleece And cloches. So after this unlucky story I have no basic a left to plant. Do I still have a lot of time to start again. They were calabrese, psb, cauliflower, kale and cabbage. Thanks a lot

Yes they are all Ok to reset. They may be a little late but they will get there.

I've not started my psb yet....figure it's got a whole year to catch up,
and I read an article in a gardening mag that suggested successionally sowing caulis and cabbages all through the spring to get a variety of sizes at a variety of times so I reckon you'll be fine.

Last year I planted calabrese 8 weeks apart, in mid February, and mid April.

They cropped within a week of each other. So I reckon you'll be okay!

That's a good news. I'll do some tomorrow. Maybe I'll buy few plant from aldi so I will have something early as well.

Really? I was planning on doing the same (kids favourite veg) and they aren't keen on it frozen...I'll bung in more beans instead!

My point was more that mid April will still be fine.

It all depends on how developed your current Calabrese is on whether they'll catch up. If you're sat with little more than a seedling, and 1 or two tiny "true" leaves, like I was, then you don't have much of a head start. But if you're sat with a large healthy plant already, 8 weeks between sowings should give you... say 3/4 weeks delay in cropping.

I always find it fascinating how things always seem to catch up quickly as the weather improves!

p.s No such thing as too many beans in my house. Still got one bag in the freezer from last year!

I've not down any of those yet, the only brassicas I have sown are sprouts and radish. That said, don't want them for summer use so sow for either autumn (calabrese, red cabbage), winter (winter cabbage, savoy cabbage, kale, sprouts, swede etc) or spring (PSB, spring cabbage and caulis) which obviously necessitates a later sowing than for summer crops.

Thanks for the advices. Btw I went to aldi and got 15 cauliflower for 2 pound so at least I have something ahead. got more seed as well and tomorrow I'll sow them again.

Not to put you off but thought I'd share my experience of buying brassica plants from Homebase, really healthy plants, labelled up as sprouts. Come autumn time they headed up and produced lovely curds. Dunno if they were wrongly labelled by the shop or somebody had swapped them round but it did mean I had no sprouts that year . Hopefully this yang a common problem
