growing corn

I sowed some corn seeds about a month ago now but no seedlings yet.

I sowed some last year but cant remember how long it took for them to come through, do you think I should sow some different ones now or is it to late?

From memory I think they should be up by now if they are inside.

Sweetcorn are generally pretty quick to germinate Id sow some new ones if I were you, I really hope its not too late as I haven't thought about sowing any yet!

I sowed mine 10 days ago. put them into a plastic bag (the type that you can open and close when you want, and left them in our south facing porch. They are up now, not by much but....
Have another go now its warmer and if you want try my bag idea as it works for me.
The corn needs to be kept warm to germinate.

Where are they ?? Last year i sowed some in the greenhouse at the lottie & the mices had them away...couldnt find 1

put mine into rootrainers about 10 days ago and left on the windowsill,they are currently about 3 ins high.
this would suggest that (a) you're not too late to resow
and (b) you need to resow

Soak the seed over night in Luke warm water, really speeds up germination.
But don't leave more than 12-18 hours

Must admit I now soak all mine to pre-germinate and wait until the little root thingy shows before potting up. I put them on a plate with kitchen roll and some water, and make sure they don't dry out. I change the water if it starts to look manky, and I roll the seeds around every day to make sure all sides stay wet. And I've not started mine yet either, so thanks for the reminder!

isnt it early to be sowing sweetcorn? its still zero outside at night here in surrey and wont be warm enough at night to put them outside for atleast another 4-6 weeks


They hate low nightime temps.

Yep - haven't sown mine yet. Make sure soil/compost isn't too wet or they can rot.

Ooooops! I planted mine several weeks ago and they're now large enough for the greenhouse (my first time). I've been keeping an eye on the temps and it hasn't gone much below 5 degs. Guess I'll just have to risk it.
