JJ @You could make 2 smaller size cold frames on the 8x6 base@

I missed to read the earlier reply..Hmm in that case I would buy the green house bases and can make 2 cold frames definately, and with 2 GH bases it comes around 4 frames.. can you please explain how can I use the glass, and base etc to finish up?

I honestly don't know what to suggest Elfeda. I've had many ideas for recycling bits and pieces but they are not always very practical when it comes to constructing them. Sometimes, I've had to accept that it is more expensive to try to re-use something that I've found, than to buy new.

        VC,

This is hard to resist the glass offer, so I would start by leaning the sheet on to fence/coldframe/sheds and let the vines go into that coop. this way my pergola like coldframe will have glass at the bottom..then plastic for the above...if possible corrugated sheets on the top. no stress

I'm sorry Elfeda, but the free glass sounds like a false economy to me, you can buy a decent ready made cold frame for under £100 that is safe, moveable and will probably work better.

A glass base on top of a greenhouse base, why 2 bases? Maybe make a brick square cemented to the base, the size of cold frame you want, then bricks going up at the edges to silicon the glass into. Then a window type of opening lid,if you google D.I.Y cold frames it might give you more ideas. Good luck with it

Beware!! I picked up an old shower door that was leaning against a wall and it fell apart in my hands.

If you really want to go DIY, look for some free window frames - at least then you have a frame that can be drilled to fit hinges, handles etc. I got two large wooden framed windows for my cold frame and built the rest from bought wood. Still cost me over £100 though.

I wouldn't be confident working with raw glass sheets, even toughened ones.

Thanks all of you who answered to my queries, finally I agree with the suggetions..and having glass laying around without securing it properly is no good. So I dropped the idea of using toughened glass. it is double thicker than the usual green house glass.. not worthy spending lot of money for materials and builder.

Bario, Can I have a look at your final cold frame build by windows?

What a relief. I've been worried about all that glass in your garden!
