re-locating autumn sown cabbages?

Hi

I sowed two lots of cabbages in Autumn (Spring Hero, April and Savoy January I think)

I think they were sown September + October/November

The first lot went to seed 3 weeks ago probably due to lack of water.

The second lot are small and seem ok but I could do with using the ground they are in.

Could I move them to another patch? Will they survive? Just thinking of digging them up and sticking them in some better ground and freeing up the old space.

never done it myself,you could try then let us know,make sure you water the roots well before you cover up with soil,then heal in,i have april,savoy and brocoli from last year,they failed to heart up,but i am happy just picking the leaves,i have also found the savoy ones are producing side spears after the top has been removed,the april are very small and slow to get going this year,i even picked of the sprouting seed head,just mix em up in the same pan,yum yum,come to me tum,

Someone with more knowledge and experience should be along shortly but I'd have thought that moving them now will stress them and increase the likelihood that they'll bolt. My understanding is they don't tolerate root disturbance at this stage, that's why we firm in and earth up to prevent rocking in the brassicas (oo-er).

tbh i need the ground they are in and it's only a few, so might just do it and let you all know how it went

I reckon they should be hearting up by now ... if not then I'm not sure that they are going to (whether moved or not, but moving is probably likely to prevent them hearting up and send them to seed)

Be interested to know what others think and whether there is a chance for them to still heart-up?

I agree they should be hearting by now - if not just cut your loses, and the cabbages, and use them as Spring greens.

I agree, if they're not hearting up by now then they never will. I think that you sowed rather too late for headed cabbages resulting in a very short first season. They are now in the their second season so wanting to produced flowers / seeds.
