  • Is it too late to plant onion sets?

I got carried away yesterday in H0m3 B@rg@ins - they were selling bags of onion sets for 49p. At checkout they were only 25p each.
What are my chances of growing usable onions from:-
    2 bags of Stuttgarter
    2 bags of Centurion
    I bag of Turbo
and a bag of Golden Gourmet shallots.

I'll plant them out anyway but I'd appreciate your opinion on whether to give them prime growing space, or just bung 'em in any odd corner!

Finally, do you think they would grow in between sweetcorn?

They might be a bit small, but should be ok. Not sure about planting between sweetcorn though - they might disturb the sweetcorns roots, but then traditionally in Mexico they supposedly gtrow pumpkins and beans in with their sweetcorn, so what do I know? lol
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
    Pumpkin pi.

Plenty of pickled onions for VC this year I reckon!

Thought I could use them young - like spring onions (if I can find them amongst the sweetcorn )

I would vg it's probably the same price as a pack of spring onion seeds!

Yes VC, grow as spring onions, this is one of the very rare years I haven't purchased cheap sets to grow as spring onions.
I appear to have run out of room!
Wouldn't think they would be a problem between s/corn.
I would be inclined to plant the Shallots as normal, plenty of time for them to do their thing.

Feed the soil, not the plants.

Perhaps plant them around the edge of your sweetcorn bed...like a border.
Then they'll be easier to harvest as and when you want them.

Plant them near carrots to keep carrot fly away then you get something even if they only grow shoots, you can eat the shoots as well
