  • proof, if needed, that a potato plant will grown from a piece of peeling.

I dug up my failed worm tower experminent. The worms did like it, and maybe in time it would have worked, but they simply didn't get through hardly any material. I did find worms living alongside it and laying eggs there though.

Most interesting though, was that a potato plant had grown from a piece of potato peeling. Here's the proof.

I also trench composted in another area and there were a couple similar weedy-looking plants that made it above ground there, amongst the larger potato plants I am growing in that area, so I pulled those small ones up to lower possibility of introducing a disease I don't want my proper potatoes to get.

This puts me back in the situation where I either need to convert my wheelie bin into a compost tumbler to get through my garden and kitchen waste, or pay the council to collect the bin ever other week.

That's one reason I don't throw peelings on the compost heap as they grow everywhere.

I put all my food waste in a hotbin. You can buy a ready made hotbin or make a DIY one if you are good at that sort of thing. I am hopeless at DIY so I opted for the ready made, rat proof version, and while not perfect, it does the job I bought it for admirably.

I compost mine in a dalek, with the lid on. They don't grow when I empty it out a year later.

I'd like a hot bin. Main problem is cost, so I can't buy a decent one. Thought about making my own out of the wheelie bin but it wont get much sun where it sits and it wont be as insulated as a proper hot bin, so imagine it wouldn't work that well..?

What you need for a hotbin is insulation and airflow. If you don't have airflow you get anaerobic breakdown which is horrible (slimy and smelly like a pile of grass cuttings goes). I suspect you would find insulating it fairly easy - you could use polystyrene packaging for example. It wouldn't need to go in the sun. The air flow is harder - the bought hotbin has a grille at the bottom (which also lets out any liquid produced) and a valve at the top, and you can also get an aeration pipe to help with this. You'd also need to make some form of access at the bottom to get the rotted compost out.

Arghhhh tatties!!!! The previous occupant of my allotment must have grown nowt but leeks and potatoes because even though I've dug the entire plot over I'm STILL getting potatoes sprouting in all manner of places Last week I spent a good hour carefully removing them from my flower bed!!!! They're now planted in the proper tattie bed! What amazed me was hat some seemed to be shooting up from the tiniest bits of gnarled old potato skin!
