What is it, and is it bolting?

About six weeks ago I sowed autumn calabrese, and recently potted them on.

But the leaves are brighter green than my other brassicas, and don't have that leathery- brassica feel about them. So I'm beginning to doubt that these are brassicas at all.

Then this morning I noticed little clusters of buds at the base, as if they're going to seed.

So I'm not sure whether these are autumn calabrese, and even if they are, whether they're bolting already and should be thrown out. Advice please!

Is it one of those broccoli raab thingies - or a mustard green? Nibble a leaf and see if its hot!

No, not hot veggiechicken. I did wonder if it was broccoli raab in the wrong seed packet. Never tried growing that, but I may as well plant these out and see what it's like. Thanks

They look exactly like mine did earlier this month. The packet was Mr Fothergill's Broccoli (Autumn) Green Calabrese. I'm afraid your plant is going to shoot up in the next week or so and have a nice yellow flower on it.

I sowed some more and pricked them out into modules yesterday, see if they do any good. If these do the same as the first batch, I'm giving up and the packet's going in the bin.

Oh dear, that's a coincidence Martin. I'll maybe avoid Mr Fothergill for calabrese.
Hope your next attempt works out better.

Rather than waste space at my allotment, I've decided to plant these into my flowerbeds. If they're bolting calabrese then the flowers are pretty, or if they turn into raab I can eat them.

And I grew these purposely to try n stagger the harvesting season as they are supposed to be 60 day maturing and for that reason shall start to put out bud a lot earlier!

Well! That's my thinking behind it!

My Raab seeds say don't sow until July or they will bolt, so sounds probable to me
