I cut rings that are probably an inch and a half wide, stick copper tape round, then push tehm into teh soil a bit around the plants. I've not had any problems with them blowing away, although my back garden probably isn't as exposed as some allotments.
I've had limited success with standing containers on copper impregrated matting and I use this for my strawberries amongst other things. Its not perfect but I do think it reduces slug and snail attack a bit.
