Hi, I'm going to be making a raised bed today, it going straight onto the lawn, do I need to dig the turf up and out or can I just dump compost and topsoil directly onto it?

Hi,if your raised bed is going to be about 2 ft high,you could leave the grass there. If not,your plant roots would find it difficult to grow through the matted roots of the grass,which has quite a thickness. When you dig grass out,you can sink the raised bed into the soil a bit,so compost doesn't spill out from underneath.

If you lift the turf (and it's nice, civilised grass....not weed infested couch) you can put it back in upside down and dump compost/topsoil on top of it to help fill your bed.
Another alternative (depending on what you wish to grow there) is to cover the grass with cardboard or thick layers of newspaper....cover with a high nutrient layer (manure for example) then your compost/top soil. Great thanks I've read a couple of options but you've explianed it better! It won't be two feet high probably only a foot, I'll probably go with the lift the turf and turn it upside down. Thanks!Comment
