  • Roma toms

    Instead of letting Romas go mad, has anyone tried to do them as cordons and nip the side shoots out? I know that the quantity would be a lot less, but by letting fewer fruits develop, would the remaining ones be bigger or have better taste?

    Could be worth a go but not sure if Roma has a leader branch.

      Yes, that's how I do mine. They make slightly curvacious plants but go up canes/strings fine. Crop was huge last year.

        I'm growing Roma tomatoes and been taking off the side shoots. Would you normally leave them?

          Not sure if it is the same, but I am growing super roma VF, which says on the packet that you should take off the side shoots and treat as a cordon which will grow to only about 4ft high. I haven't grown it before so I have no experience of what actually happens.

              I thought the Roma VF was a semi-determinate? I'm sure we've had this query before. You can nip out some side shoots if the plant gets too uncontrollable but usually the side shoots are left on.

                I think it's a determinate variety..

                    Determinate varieties "don't" have their sideshoots removed.

                        The way I remember it is:

                        D=Determinate.
                        D=Don't ................(Remove Sideshoots).

                          there are are a few threads on this variety,have a look on the search,/internet,lots of em,i am growing some this year,from what i have gleaned is this,
                          height 3 to 4 foot
                          plant 18 to 24 in apart,
                          Bushy semi determinate,
                          put the cane in the ground first,then the plant aprox 2 in from it,
                          Mine are planted outside,with a cane for some support if/when needed,with a prox 2.5 between plants,on some searches on the general thing is plant aprox 18 in, and they become an overcrowded fence,to me that beats the object,hence my larger space,time will tell.

                            Hmm, I have 2 plants so maybe I treat one as a bush and the other as a cordon and see what happens. Only I don't have space to put them 2ft apart - its 1ft max, I'm afraid.

                              You may get away with 1ft if both were cordon but I think you may be struggling with a bush.
