  • Bendy garlic stalks

Hi some of my over wintered garlic plants stalk have bent over at ground level. Does this mean I ought to pick them now.

I'm having the same thing happen, I picked one at the weekend and it seemed ready, don't know if that was the right thing to do though... :-/

Once they've started to fall over its time to pick them up. Early days though, most garlic isn't ready until end of June at the earliest. I hope they are ok - don't forget to take photos to enter into the vines online competition

Some of mine bent over....just three from a row.
Mine are not ready....I can only assume that either the wind blew them or a fox slept there!

My garlic is OK - I have harvested a few to give more room for the others but my onions have started bending over, I think because of the wind and they definately not ready.

My turkeys used to nest in my courgettes - they were always flattened

Mine have fallen over and have white onion rot. You can pull one to see if the cloves have separated?

Yeah, I assumed that the foxes had flattened most of mine too... probably a combination of them and the wind as you say. I'm loving the garlic scapes... very tasty

Mine (planted late November) haven't fallen over yet but the outer leaves are starting to turn yellow so today I decided to dig one up as I couldn't see if I had any kind of bulb.

I was very pleasantly surprised. It was twice the size of any of last years and I can see that the cloves have separated. I can't remember the variety as I bought the original garlic from the garden centre 3 years ago and then replanted my own.

The prophet of doom -husband- is of course prophesying that because it's much bigger it won't be as tasty.

                  Why on earth not?????

I shall be trying it probably next week so we will see who is right.

Hope it's me as I planted a lot.

I will pull up one tomorrow. I can see the bulb and it looks quite big (for me)
Unfortunately the cats like sleeping there as it's in the sun and the mulch is lovely and dry on top but moist underneath

I plucked one up this morning because all of mine had fallen over...

It was still pretty pathetic in size. I'm a little concerned they won't get bigger.

I've kind of neglected mine since I've moved. They just sitting there at my mums house. The other day I noticed that the leaves are starting to turn yellow.
I did have a sneaky peak under the soil and it looks like the bulb has fattened up since I planted them in November.

I pulled up all the ones that have fallen over and I must say I'm quite pleased with the result
