courgettes and veg/fruit in container

hi- another novice question. is it too late to plant courgettes seeds now?

any other easy enough vegetables/fruit i can plant in containers (have already got potatoes and tomatoes!)

No, you can still sow as they grow very quickly.

There is loads of stuff you can plant in containers (am assuming you mean now). Was there anything in particular you were thinking of (to narrow it down a bit) and do you already have the pots (size will make a big difference)?

Plenty of time to sow courgettes. You can grow them in (large) containers, and get a reasonable crop, but they are very hungry plants, so you will limit them a bit.

I do an early crop of courgettes in the big pots in the greenhouse and have been cropping for the last 10 days or so.

Most things will grow in a pot if they have enough room and you feed and water we'll. Have a look at pottys photos on his profile ^^^^. I always grow lettuce and herbs by my kitchen door in pots, saves the walk up the garden. I'm also doing runner beans and toms in pots this year too.

Dwarf beans are quick and pretty and they produce well in pots. You can get green ones, yellow or red splotchy ones and now is a good time to sow them.
Also, dwarf peas, mixed salad leaves, carrots (especially the round ones which don't need such a deep pot).

Strawberries, strawberries and more strawberries but you'd have to buy them rather than sow....same goes for peppers and chilis.

Re what we like, we r vegetarians so generally eat all vegetables with very few exceptions like rhubarb. As this is my first attempt at veggie growing I want to start this year with easy to grow plants rather than being too worried about other things.. If it works this year, I will have more confidence to do other veggies next year..

Tis the season for salad and most of that is easy to grow and quick to produce. Things like lettuce (lollo rossa) is a nice red cut and come again variety or mesclun (a French mixed leaf) cut and come again grow well in any container about 6" deep. As do spring onions and radish.

An outdoor cumber ridge type would also be a possibility without to much stress.

Others will be along with other ideas I am sure.

Blueberries do well in pots and you could get a nice bush from a garden centre for about £10 with a crop of blueberries which would ripen this year. You might even get a small one for less. They need acid soil, but grow happily in a large pot as long as you don't water them with "hard" tap water. You may need to net them to keep the birds off the fruit.

I grow most things in pots, especially carrots, cabbages, lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, strawberries and spinach. You easily have time to plant salads of various sorts, and some of them (like pak choi, mizuna and other chinese greens) are better planted after the longest day as they are less likely to bolt.

One thing: do think about watering before planting. I never stop being amazed about just how much water evaporate from pot on a windy sunny day. There's lots of good advice on this forum about how to make your life easier for not very much money.

You are in the micro climate of London so you'll be nice and toasty compared to the countryside, even here in the south east. So you have an advantage and a slightly longer growing season.

There are probably still lots of vegetable plants available in garden centres if you want to grow things that are too late to sow
