Is this a similar idea to what they do on the poultry forums? One of the headings is breeds and you open it and find all the relevant posts have been tucked under headings so you can look up Leghorns or whatever, very useful way of doing it, just imagine being able to access tomatoes or dwarf french beans instead of wondering just where that very useful tip was you remembered seeing 6 months ago.
best wishes

Hi Scollops, i find that the tastiest spud is Foremost originally from Suttons, gives a good crop and easy to grow. Then again, its down to personal taste. Good luck in your search.good Diggin, Chuffa.

Totally agree, brilliant thread - and so useful to a newcomer. Reading the catalogues, you'd believe everything was 'the best', I much prefer to hear the views of those who have grown and eaten first hand! Spoilt for choice with my earlies next year, but will definitely be growing some! Many thanks each and everyone for sharing your wisdom!Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

I think this is a good time of year to start this if we are going on "taste" ie while we are actually eating the crops! It is not so easy to think back to last year as to what was tasty.
So at least this way the "gold standard" will hopefully be based on our current eating.
Do you think it would be helpful also to know whether a particular veg is good for all round cooking - boiling, steaming, etc. or would this be bogging it all down a bit?~

This is my Sharpes Express grown in a bucket. Lovely looking potatoes. Crop was good. Cooked well. Flavour less than average. I won't bother growing them again - but had to try.Attached Files

Great looking potatoes Alice. I grew them last year and like you, I did'nt think a lot of the taste.

I planted both premiere and ulster sceptre, they both tasted very nice but the ulster sceptre was heavier cropping.
I grew them in tubs, and have just emptied the last tub of each yesterday,
The ulster sceptre were great with a bumper crop but the premiere only had 4 or 5 potatoes that hadnt started to rot, I am putting this down to the amount of rain we have been having lately so it would appear that ulster sceptre is the better of the two tried.

Hi all
Brilliant thread. Arun Pilot was best for me, but thanks to this space. Next year, i will be trying Mimi & Cherie. If there is any room left, possibly try Roosevaal too. yeah like i'm gonna be able to fit that lot in"He that but looketh on a plate of ham and eggs to lust after it hath already committed breakfast with it in his heart"
