I have l large polystyrene box sitting empty in my garage. I bought it when I was doing a bit of catering to keep food cool along with a freezer thing- a-me- jig to keep food cold, so am assuming it is safe from too many horrid chemcals. I wondered if I can use it as a planter for vegetables, what sort if soil to put in it and what to grow in it. Has anyone tried this?

I've always put pieces of polystyrene in my big pots in the garden,to help drainage & so that I don't need to use as much compost,it's nearly the same thing. salad leaves is a good idea & rocket or basil - my basil is in a 10cm deep pot & is 2 ft tall,it's bending slightly (I'l prune & eat that bit later). I feed regularly with a high nitrogen feed as they're a leafy food & because of the small pot size. What depth is your container & how thick are the walls, water will expand the compost a bit, make it heavy, would the walls of polystyrene crack? If that did happen, the plants could easily be moved though. If it's 12inch deep - carrots? Use multi purpose compost if you have some?Location : Essex

Pop drainage holes in it and cover it with sand and cement to make a light weight stone trough.

If it had a lid, I would get some wood shavings & use it to save some dug up spuds for next year.sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”
