This year I've grown Pentland Javelin, on the advice of my mother-in-law who has grown them several times with great success, producing a nice waxy new potato in her rather sandy North Norfolk soil. I'm growing in Brittany in a heavyish soil, but lightened up with pleny of organic matter (mostly rotted wood as there were a lot of rotting apple tree prunings lying on the ground when we dug the bed). This should make for a slightly acid soil, which I understand is right for potatoes.
They have grown well, and am now lifting at about 10 weeks, which is as recommended for this first early, but they are rather disappointing, being really floury. I've tried to research on this, but can't really work out why, other than it has been rather dry over the last few weeks, and I have not watered them too much as they are in a part of the garden which is quite far from a water source. Could this be the reason for their flouriness? Should I just have watered them more? The same thing happened last year (although not as bad) with the Linzer Delikatess that I grew, and it was also pretty dry.
