Leek advice- could this be correct?

Yesterday we bought 100 pencil sized leeks from a guy at a market.

We asked him what variety as these were to be the 2nd planting out and would need to fully overwinter.
He said they were a mixture of the 'blue' ( winter hardy) and the normal green ones.
It seemed a bit odd to mix them like that and he assured me that the blue ones would protect to a certain extend the green ones.

Seemed rather odd, but we needed some, and the price was very good.
Did he see us coming and had a chuckle- or has anyone else heard of this?

Did he mean that they were crosses between a blue and a green leek - like BlueGreen Winter hardy?

The blue leeks - like Blue Solaise, are supposed to be hardier than the green ones - so perhaps he told the truth

You can see some of them are green and others are more grey/green/blue.
Jumbled in together.

It just seems strange to mix them together-- well, I'm not going to separate them, so it'll be interesting to see how the green ones fair.
Espesh if we get a few nights of -18C again!

yep- we get it almost every year. Not last year though (- it only went down to -15C)...more often than not we have 3 or 4 groups of 2-4 nights at -18C

One of the locals said the coldest they have ever recorded was -28C back in the 80's

Apparently most of the gardens lost everything, and half the hedgerow died.

Seems I ain't seen nothing yet!!!!

I suppose when it gets that cold it doesn't matter how blue/hardy the leeks are
