  • Bitter smell from Arron Pilot potatoes on scraping skins

Dug some of these up today and scraped some for mash. About to be eaten, but on scraping them they gave off a bitter smell. Surprisingly strong. Wondering if anyone else has ever had this and knows what it is. I hope they don't taste bitter as well.

Please tell me they weren't GREEN, if they have a bitter taste when cooked DON'T eat.

Otherwise goggle potato glycoalkaloids see if that fits.

No, not green. I've only had a couple of small green ones this year which I've just chucked. These smelt as if they were green though. As you probably know, the green is actually chlorophyll which isn't poisonous, but it tells you they got light and will have also produed solanine which is poisonous. Still, I do wonder if some potatoes could have high solanine without light exposure and the green warning..?

Anyway, ate some of them, but not all. Not that great. They had both a bitter and a sweet taste combined. I think they were ok, but perhaps just the variety and not to my taste.
