Growing horseradish in containers

Hi everyone,

We were just wondering if any of you grow (or have grown) horseradish in containers? What were your success rates and what lessons did you learn?

I did it a few years back. I grew 4 plants in a recycled 25 gallon plastic water tank, which gave me the depth required. There were very few if any problems during the growing cycle and the results were good.

When harvested SWMBO made me some horseradish sauce which was nice, however when she had wiped away the tears after grating she vowed never again. That would be the end of that then!!!

We grew some in a potato barrel, good depth of soil gave good roots, which unfortunately got out through the drainage holes and now we have horseradish springing up in a radius from the barrel (which was on a hard standing on membrane!).

Never again, not worth the hassle, even if it's in a container watch for it escaping.

i'm thinking of growing some horseradish. I have a spare barrel and the bricks to stop it spreading.

Please could someone advise me on how many thong/roots i should purchase. I was thinking of 2 or 3, so i can rotate between them when harvesting, or will 1 be enough to thrive?

You can just grow one if you want,two would be safe incase one plant fails to thrive? Then you can probably take cuttings maybe?

I grew some in a container one year but unfortunately ants set up a nest in there as well so I ended up (reluctantly) drowning them in order to water the plant. Now I have inherited horse radish on the lotty and it wanders off at an alarming pace. Nothing quite like it though for flavour and intensity.

Not sure horseradish does "not thriving" judging by how hard it is to get rid of now that we have it I think it depends on how quickly you want it to establish, it's one of those plants that you take a bit off and plant somewhere else and hey presto even more horseradish. I got mine from T&M and it came as 5 thongs if that's any interest.

Every place on the lottie where i put the container with horseradish in it, has a little clump of horseradish popping up................and it was set on bricks!

Fortunately my container was on concrete even horseradish has a problem with that

I tried growing in large deep plastic pots standing on a patio at my allotment. The roots split the pots wide open.

I took horseradish root cuttings in the summer of 2014 and grew them on in pots in the polytunnel over winter, big mistake; they grew through the pots, in some cases splitting them and into the tunnel beds. On lifting the pots pieces of the root broke away down in the ground. I have had an awful job trying to clear it from the beds and just when I think I've succeeded up pops another.
